Fitted Wardrobes:

The essential buyers’ guide

Why choose fitted wardrobes?

Here in the densely-populated UK, many of us live in homes where storage space is at a premium. We also have a lot of period housing stock with very few straight lines or perfect right angles, making it difficult to find freestanding furniture that both maximises space and fits neatly into your interior architecture.

Bespoke wardrobes are the solution to your wonky walls and crooked alcoves, allowing you to create storage that is completely tailored to your property and your requirements. And if you’re lucky enough to have more space to play with, then you can add luxurious extra features or even create a dedicated dressing room.

Key benefits

Choosing built-in wardrobes comes with numerous practical and aesthetical advantages. In order to maximise the impact of your finished wardrobes, make sure that you carefully consider what you would like to store (including the linear meterage of hanging clothes, numbers of shoes and bags etc.) so that your fitted wardrobes can be appropriately designed and tailored exactly to your requirements.

Uniquely tailored to your needs

Perhaps you own some precious jewellery that you’d like to keep easily accessible but safely locked away when you’re not wearing it. Maybe you’re after ‘his and hers’ wardrobes with different configurations for each. Or you’re creating a larger dressing area and you’d like to include a statement ottoman or island with storage as well as seating.

It is very difficult to achieve any of these highly bespoke features if you’re buying ‘off-the-shelf. Choosing to go bespoke will allow you to create something truly unique that reflects your lifestyle habits as well as your tastes, and that will bring you joy from the moment you wake up till you go to bed.

Customisable details

When it comes to those luxury extra details, the sky’s the limit if you choose bespoke wardrobes. For recent projects, we’ve created customised accessory drawers with dividers to perfectly accommodate specific items like sunglasses, watches or cufflinks, concealed storage with integrated power sockets for hairdryers, styling tools and chargers, and integrated concealed dressing tables that slide/open out when needed and can then be stowed away to save space. Whatever the client has always felt is missing from their current storage set-up, we will strive to provide!

Beautiful materials

Custom built-in wardrobes are your chance to think outside the box with your interiors. While a classic painted Shaker style or lacquered timber might be to your taste, don’t be afraid to explore and combine different materials and finishes. Glass, mirrors, metals, wallpaper, fabric, suede and rattan can all be deployed to great effect. Think about tying the aesthetic of your wardrobes into the style of your house – whether that means bright colours and contemporary recessed handles or pretty panels of pleated floral cotton.

Maximising space

Designing your own wardrobes alongside a specialist joinery company allows you to maximise space internally and externally. Inside the wardrobes, cabinet sizes and depths can be precisely tailored to what’s being stored – shoes, for example, require much less depth than hanging but are often given more unnecessarily. Outside, you can build wardrobes precisely under eaves or beams, use them to frame a door to an en suite bathroom or create a seamless run of storage along one wall.
